High-throughput analysis platform

Introduction

The Biodiversity Centre laboratories represent a unique opportunity for biologists seeking a space in which to conduct their experiments.

Platform description

The high-throughput laboratories are subdivided according to function. The platform includes all infrastructure and equipment necessary for the culture and identification of microorganisms, as well as molecular characterization of samples.

Soil reception centre

This laboratory is set up for preparing soil samples. Equipment available includes instruments for soil-sifting, weighing and drying samples.

Isolation lab

This laboratory is used for isolation and maintenance of fungi and bacterial cultures. Equipment available includes laminar flow hoods, biological safety cabinets, an automatic petri dish filler, incubators and shakers.

Extraction lab

Designed for DNA and RNA extractions, this space offers a liquid-handling robot, as
well as equipment for quantifying nucleic acids and grinding samples.

Pre-PCR lab

This laboratory is used for the preparation of reactions for amplification of nucleic acids. Several thermocyclers for PCR, qPCR and gradient-PCR are available. Preparation of 96-
and 384-well plates can be automated with one of our liquid-handling robots.

Electrophoresis room

This space includes all equipment necessary for agarose and acrylamide gel migration, and a gel imaging system.

Labo post-PCR

This laboratory is dedicated to nucleic acid analysis. Available equipment includes a
plate reader, a Li-Cor DNA analysis system and a Covaris focused-ultrasonicator. Some
protocols can be automated with one of our liquid-handling robots.

Fees

Fees for Université de Montréal members

  • $50 per user, per month

Non-member fees (academic)

  • $85 per user, per month
  • Training: $50 / hour

Non-member fees (industrial)

  • $150 per user, per month
  • Training: $100 / hour

Fees are calculated for each user, on a monthly basis. Fees do not include training, products or consumables. Under certain conditions, a user contract may include certain products (for ex., liquid nitrogen), for an additional fee.

Regulations

  • To use the platform equipment, your name must be on the list of registered users. To register, contact Jocelyne Ayotte, laboratory coordinator. She will provide the training required to use the equipment properly.
  • Equipment must be used according to contract specifications.
  • All users must sign the ‘log book’ each time they use a piece of equipment.
  • All users are responsible for ensuring that equipment is used properly.
  • External users must provide proof of insurance coverage.
