Use of willow plantations for the treatment of pig manure and wastewaters

Labrecque lisiers

The use of organic residues as fertilizer for willow plantations in short rotation intensive culture constitutes an interesting avenue for exploration, since it simultaneously recycles waste and promotes improved plant growth. Two projects are currently in progress within this thematic research area.

  • The establishment of an integrated ecological system to treat wastewater from the municipality of Saint-Roch-de-l’Achigan by means of a willow plantation, and utilization of the biomass produced as biofuel for heating one of the village’s public buildings (a school).
  • The development of a technique for ecological and economical recycling of wastewater from a pig farm by reusing it on a willow plantation in SRIC.
