An article by Daniel Kierzkowski titled A growth-based framework for leaf shape development and diversity recently published in Cell has been highlighted by the editors of Science. In his study, professor Kierzkowski used direct imagery and genetics to better understand the growth of a simple leaf in comparison to that of a more complex dissected leaf. The results show that the two types of leaves use the same developmental program. Therefore, the diversity in leaf shapes is obtained by modifying the regulation of overall differentiation and local growth.
